Polo d’Innovazione di Genomica, Genetica e Biologia (Polo GGB) is a highly specialized Italian private enterprise operating in the Life Sciences field and focusing on research and development of genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics solutions, and delivery of services to the academic and public/private sectors. Polo GGB receives substantial international funding in individual grants and as a partner of research consortia and projects, including Target Malaria, ISIDORe, and SCENARIOS.

The Ecology and Genetics branch of Polo GGB, based in Terni (Italy), is a cutting-edge research center working on various aspects of biology of vector mosquitoes. The center is equipped with unique facilities for the generation, rearing, and studying genetically modified mosquitoes, including mosquitoes with gene drive constructs designed for malaria control.

Position Summary

A postdoctoral researcher position is available immediately in the Ecology and Genetics Research Center to work under the supervision of Dr. Jaroslaw Krzywinski on a project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and aimed at identification and characterization of molecular interactions involved in the sex determination and sexual differentiation of the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. For relevant publications see: Science 2016; Curr. Biol. 2021, Curr. Biol. 2023.

The candidate is expected to have a strong background in either biochemistry or molecular biology and genetics, and an excellent practical understanding of techniques commonly used in the study of protein molecular interactions.

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or closely related field.
  • Expertise and hands-on experience in:
    • protein biochemistry, such as protein expression, isolation of protein complexes through pulldown/co-immunoprecipitation, analysis of protein-protein or protein-nucleic acid interactions
    • molecular cloning
    • mass spectrometry technologies (desirable)
    • cell culture and transfection (desirable)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in experimental design, data acquisition, analysis, and manuscript preparation, evidenced by the first-author publications in quality journals.

Personal Skills

  • Highly motivated to perform cutting-edge research and publish in top-quality journals
  • Able to plan, conduct, and analyze experiments with little supervision
  • Meticulous attention to details, well-organized in performing experiments and record keeping
