Target Malaria is an international project which aims to reduce the population of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes in sub-Saharan Africa. The approach is malaria control by mosquito control. By reducing the population of malaria mosquitoes, Target Malaria aims to reduce the transmission of the disease. The Polo GGB Terni Open Days will take place in the building of Via Mazzieri 2 on 9th and 10tn of June. Our aim is to explain the goals of Target Malaria and the technologies involved in this project, which has been funded by the Bill &amp;amp; Melinda Gates Foundation. The Bill &amp;amp; Melinda Gates Foundation sees Polo GGB as one of the protagonists engaged in the international campaign for fighting against malaria.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><u>Schedule<\/u>:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: circle\">\n<li><strong>Friday 9<\/strong>, from 10am to 1.30pm &#8211; Conference &#8211; Institutional meeting ;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saturday 10<\/strong>, from 10.30 to 16.00 &#8211; The structure will be open to the public, citizens and students may visit the lab, see the technologies, interact with the researchers and watch video materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The purpose of this event is to make this new laboratory known to the city, its institutions and to the whole scientific community. The Polo GGB laboratory in Terni is an infrastructure unique in the world with regard to the dimensions of mosquito cages and its technical specifications for containment. The ultra-modern facility plays a key role in the ecological testing of genetically modified mosquitoes which have been ultimately engineered for the fight against malaria in Africa and beyond. The new Terni laboratory places the city of Terni in the centre of an international research network. The initiative is promoted by the Terni City Council, Polo GGB, and Target Malaria, and will be attended by scholars and scientists involved in this research, including Professor Andrea Crisanti, coordinator for TM research activities in Italy and United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Please contact Dr. Letizia Cinti for more info: <a href=\"mailto:l.cinti@pologgb.com\">l.cinti@pologgb.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Target Malaria Project<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/targetmalaria.org\">http:\/\/targetmalaria.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Malaria is still one of the most common diseases in the world. The infection is caused by a parasite, the Plasmodium, which is transmitted to humans by the bite of few species of Anopheles mosquitoes. In the last year malaria caused more than 438,000 deaths worldwide, of which 70% are children under the age of 5. The project aims to develop new genetic technologies for the elimination of malaria vectors. There is a great need to develop new approaches to combat the few species of Anopheles mosquitoes which transmit malaria because current interventions, based on pharmacological treatments, mosquito nets and insecticides have not turned out to be entirely satisfactory for the eradication of malaria in malaria-endemic countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The confined laboratory located in Terni houses four climatic rooms which are equipped with the latest frontier of technology that allows most precise temperature and humidity control for ecological experiments on wild and GM mosquito populations. In addition, light conditions mimicking the daily variation including dawn and sunset can be programmed in order to simulate a near-natural tropical climate under which the complete biological cycle of mosquitoes would naturally occur.
