POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS – SEX DETERMINATION IN MOSQUITOES

Two postdoctoral researcher positions are available immediately in the Ecology and Genetics Research Center to work under the supervision of Dr. Jaroslaw Krzywinski on identification and characterization of genes and interactions involved in the sex determination and sexual differentiation of the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. For relevant publications see: Science 2016; Curr. Biol. 2021, Curr. Biol. 2023.

The candidates are expected to have a strong background in either biochemistry or molecular biology and genetics, and an excellent practical understanding of techniques commonly used in the molecular biology laboratory.

 

  • Closing date: 31 Dec 2023

  • Location: Ecology & Genetic Research Center, Terni

  • Salary: Commensurate with experience (plus benefits)

  • Start date: Positions available immediately

  • Employment duration: Two years, with a possibility of extension dependent on the availability of funds.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Position 1 (Senior Postdoctoral Researcher)

  • Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or closely related field.
  • Expertise and hands-on experience in:
    • molecular cloning
    • protein biochemistry, such as protein expression, isolation of protein complexes, analysis of protein-protein or protein-nucleic acid interactions
    • cell culture and transfection (desirable)
    • mass spectrometry technologies (desirable)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in experimental design, data acquisition, analysis, and manuscript preparation evidenced by the first-author publications in quality journals.

 

Position 2 (Postdoctoral Researcher)

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, or closely related field.
  • Expertise and hands-on experience in:
    • molecular cloning
    • DNA/RNA biology
    • RNA extraction and manipulation
    • insect transgenesis and genome editing (desirable)
    • cell culture and transfection (desirable)
    • bioinformatic analysis of transcriptomic data (desirable)
  • At least one published first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal or a submitted manuscript.

 

Personal Skills

  • Highly motivated to perform cutting-edge research and publish in top-quality journals
  • Able to plan, conduct, and analyze experiments with little supervision
  • Meticulous attention to details, well-organized in performing experiments and record keeping
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
