The manager leads the biosafety efforts, ensuring that operations adhere to the highest standards, and drawing from years of expertise in entomology and biosafety. The Biosafety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring safety protocols, obtaining regulatory permits, providing safety-related training and ultimately for the BSL-2 clearance and access program.
Tania Persampieri currently holds the position of Biosafety Manager at the Genetic and Ecology Research Centre of Polo GGB. Following the completion of her MSc in Medical Biotechnology, she embarked on a professional journey dedicated to exploring the molecular factors influencing the mating behaviour and fertility of Anopheles mosquitoes. With over 12 years of experience on exotic arthropods and the assessment of genetically modified (GM) mosquito fitness and efficacy, involving both self-limiting and self-sustaining genetic systems. In her role as Biosafety Manager, she is dedicated to ensuring strict adherence to safe work practices and procedures, with a particular emphasis on research related to the application of gene drive technology for controlling vector-borne diseases.
A team of experts with diverse expertise in biosafety, microbiology, and related fields provide both ad hoc and regular advice to the Biosafety Manager at Polo GGB. Together, they ensure that biosafety protocols comply with the most current legislative requirements and safety practices.
After obtaining an International Master in European Studies, Policy Advisor and Project Consultant, Clelia has gained over 15 years’experience in managing and consulting on European, national and international research funds, both within the private and public sector. She is the project manager of the Crisanti Lab at Imperial College London and has specialized on EU-funded grants (MSCA, HEALTH, RI) and privately-funded projects. Before joining Imperial she worked as Grants Manager for Microtest Matrices, a spin-off of Imperial College funded by Professor Andrea Crisanti, where she supported a number of SME-oriented research collaborations funded by the Department of Trade and Industry, Home Office and UKRI. Clelia is responsible for overseeing and managing the activities of the biosafety experts group and liaising with Polo GGB.
After obtaining his degree in Biochemistry and Applied Clinical Biochemistry from UMIST in 2001, Andrew completed a PhD in Molecular Parasitology from the University of Manchester, studying the folate biosynthetic pathway of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. In 2006 he joined Imperial College, London, to study the sexual stages of Plasmodium, with an emphasis on developing transmission-blocking interventions (TBIs) to target the parasite within the mosquito host, inhibiting or preventing the onward transmission of malaria. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, University of Cambridge, and his main interests focus on the identification of novel anti-malarial transmission blocking vaccine targets, vaccine delivery, the development of assays to examine TBI efficacy, and assessing the practical impact of introducing TBIs on populations of mosquitoes and vertebrate in both the laboratory and the field. He has widespread experience of complex insectary work in the UK and abroad, and has an extensive background in the infrastructure and biosafety of arthropod containment and feeding facilities.
PhD and Professor in Entomology, Romeo is currently senior entomologist at the Centro Agricoltura Ambiente “G.Nicoli” and a free consultant. He has more than 35 years of experience in mosquito ecology studies, mosquito borne disease surveillance and management of BSL3 laboratory. He served as the European Director of the Society of Vector Ecology (1998-’99) and the Italian Director of the European Mosquito Control Association (2003-’05). He is providing expertise consultations to international bodies such as World Health Organization (WHO) Europe, European Centre for Diseases Prevention and Control (ECDC), European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
has worked as a health and safety advisor for over 20 years. His career started after graduation with a MSc in Medical Microbiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After completing his MSc he went on to work for Professor Douglas Youngs group at Imperial College London developing high throughput assays to identify novel drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis. He later moved into laboratory management and took up the role of Laboratory and Safety Manager at the Magdi Yacoub Institute at Harefield Hospital, before joining Imperial College London as Faculty Safety Manager. His background is in biosafety and during his time as Imperial Stefan has advised on biosafety controls, design specifications for new labs and provided training and advice for researchers working in laboratories. His experience led to Target Malaria asking him to take part in insectary inspections and audits in Perugia, Burkina Faso and Mali.
has many years of experience as Manager of the Containment Level 3 (CL3) of the Richard Elliott Biosafety Laboratories (REBL) at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research. The laboratories have been specially designed to enable safe handling of pathogens which require CL3, including ACDP Hazard Group 3, SAPO3 and Class 3 agents and to support research teams to respond rapidly to new emerging and re-emerging disease threats. The facility is connected with research and health facilities worldwide in the fight against viral pathogens. In early 2024, Angela moved from CVR to a new more senior role at Glasgow University, with Biosafety oversight on CL3 and Insectaries and Biosafety in general.
