Top Italian Scientist # 6 – Gianni Cesareni – March 19, 2015, ore 2 pm, Classroom 8, School of Medicine, Perugia
Join us for a new event of the “Top Italian Scientist” seminar series, to be held on Thursday, March 19, 2015, h: 2-4 pm, at the Classroom 8 of the School of Medicine (Univ. of Perugia).
Guest speaker will be Prof. Gianni Cesareni, Full Professor of Genetics at the University of Roma Tor Vergata, who will be holding the speech “Cell networks and networks of molecules: an holistic approach to model the processes underlying muscle regeneration“.
Skeletal muscle tissue is a relatively stable, if observed in the temporal space of life of an organism. As a result of chemical or mechanical damage or due to chronic stress due to genetic disorders such as muscular dystrophies, muscle tissue shows, however, a robust regenerative capacity which leads to the synthesis of new muscle fibers. The inflammatory process that follows the damage activates a complex interaction between a few tens of different cell types that monitor the state of health of the tissue and exchange signals that contribute in succession to change its molecular state and their differentiation program. The team of Prof. Cesareni has recently started a program that aims to describe the network of interactions between different cell types residing in the muscle and their activation as a result of damage. The objective is to construct a series of models that reproduce the kinetics of the cellular interactions, in particular describing how the signals that the cells are exchanged can modify the state of the cells through the re-modulation of the network of logical interactions between the proteins that govern the transmission of the signal in the different cell types. At the seminar will describe the strategy behind the project and the first results.
Prof. Cesareni is Professor of Genetics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. After obtaining a degree in Physics from the University of Rome La Sapienza, he spent three years at Cambridge in the laboratory of Sidney Brenner. He then moved to Heidelberg at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory where for nine years he led a working group on the mechanism that control the replication of plasmid DNA. Since 1989 he teaches and works in Rome. He is interested in the relationship between specificity and promiscuity of protein interactions. Over the past two years, much of his research team focused on a project aimed at understanding the process of muscle regeneration in terms of systems. He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and he has obtained a grant from the European Research Council.
