The event, bringing together all the partners involved in the project, takes place in Athens from January 23rd to 26th.

For Polo GGB, our researchers Anna Rocchi and Chiara Leo will participate in the bioinformatics activities in Siena, and Luisa Nunziangeli, the head of the immunology laboratory at the Terni location, will be in attendance.
SCENARIOS (Strategies for health protection, pollution Control and Elimination of Next generAtion RefractIve Organic chemicals from the Soil, vadose zone, and water) is a project funded by the European Community with the University of Piemonte Orientale as the coordinator.
It brings together various research institutes with the aim of designing and demonstrating a complete set of technological solutions to address detection, (bio)monitoring, long-term toxicity, risk assessment, pollution control, and remediation of PFAS as a testbed to achieve the ambitious goal of zero pollution from organic chemicals.
Polo GGB’s contribution within SCENARIOS is multifaceted:
- Evaluate how PFAS can affect human cell expression through bulk and single cell RNA-seq analyses on an exposed three-dimensional lung model.
- Investigate how bacterial, eukaryotic, and fungal diversity may vary based on different concentrations of PFAS through up-to-date metagenomic analyses.
- Evaluate the immune response in human leukocyte samples exposed to varying concentrations of a wide range of PFASs using immunoassays (Per- or Poly Fluorinated Alkyl Substances).
- Finally, investigate the potential interference of PFASs in human blood with the immune response to vaccination against COVID-19.
