RAPID BIOTECH (a company member of the Polo GGB) project “Development of prototypes of rapid molecular diagnostic tests for pathogens of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) on a chromatographic NALF platform (Nucleic Acid Lateral Flow)” has been presented at the “International Congress on Invertebrate Pathology and Microbial Control”, held at MAINZ (Germany), from 3 to 7 August 2014.
The project, coordinated by the authors A. Ragni, F. Tabarrini, M. Carucci, CE Lorenzetti, A. Cersini, S. Puccica, V. Antognetti, M. Milito; A. Giacomelli, G. Format, F. Panara, focuses on the development of diagnostic tests based on NALF technology (nanotechnology) for the detection and diagnosis of bees pathogens such as Deformed Wing Virus (DWV), Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV) and the microsporidium Nosema (Nosema ceranae). Among bees’ diseases, Viruses and Nosemiasi are very common. Presenting symptoms rather generic, however, they are often underestimated by the industry, resulting in serious economic losses.
Now, thanks to the development of nanotechnology, RAPID BIOTECH device makes it possible an early detection and diagnosis of the causative agents before spreading, with remarkable benefits for managing the disease and choosing therapy and prophylaxis solutions. The confirmation of the diagnosis obtained with a reduced use of instrumentation and directly “on field”, bypassing specialized laboratory analysis, allows a timely and effective prevention of the disease. Due to its innovative appeal, the project generated a great interest among the participants of the conference. The project has been hosted in the facilities of the Polo d’Innovazione di Genomica, Genetica e Biologia (Polo GGB) in collaboration with the Istituto Zooprofilattico of Lazio and Tuscany.
